School Direct Training (Tuition)

About the course

The School Direct Training (Tuition) course is 38 weeks in length. The course combines practical teaching with professional training and has been designed to give Trainee Teachers the necessary learning opportunities and support to enable them to demonstrate that they are meeting the Teachers’ Standards. There are in-built assessment structures which help Trainees to audit their knowledge and understanding as well as support to help remedy individual areas for development. Trainees are asked to select one of two distinct pathways to follow.

  • Pathway 1: Prepares Trainees to teach at both EYFS and Key Stage 1
  • Pathway 2: Prepares Trainees to teach at both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

During the first half of the Autumn term the Trainee gains experience of their Host Placement Class whilst also spending time in other classes and age groups within this setting. In the second half of the Autumn Term, the Trainee will be in school for ten consecutive days when they will be expected to teach whole class lessons. After some preparation and planning time at the end of the Autumn Term, the Trainee Teacher will undertake a five week block practice in their Twin Placement School in the Spring Term, teaching 50% of the timetable. In the Summer Term the Trainee will teach 80% of the timetable during their eight-week block practice.

The Trainee Teacher will receive support and guidance from their personal Mentor, Training Manager, Lead Practitioners and the Course Director drawn from the Orwell TSA and Colchester Consortium as appropriate. The Training Manager is the Trainee’s line manager and oversees them throughout the year. The Mentor, who is an experienced member of the school.


How placements work

Orwell TSA has strong connections with a variety of schools in communities with differing needs and we ensure that all our placements are high standard and trainees are supported as well as challenged. Trainees are supported by school mentors who are enthusiastic, committed and well-trained individuals to ensure that they are well equipped for the role. We will determine placements in discussion with the trainee to accommodate the specific aspirations and development needs and during placements there is added support from the Training co-ordinator to ensure the goals of the placement are being met.

Trainees spend approximately 26 weeks on school placement. Most of this is in the main placement school in the autumn and summer terms, with at least 6 weeks in the spring term in a contrasting school.

The distance to school placements will vary. These take into account the trainee’s home address, whether they have their own transport and the placement that the school is able to offer. Our policy is to endeavour to keep journey times to school to a maximum of 50 minutes each way.

Entry requirements


In order to train as a teacher with us you must have an honours degree (class 2:2 or above) (or equivalent) before your training can start. Of course, this means that if you expect to graduate next summer, then you can apply and if successful then you will be given a conditional offer (subject to you gaining a degree class 2:2 or above). If you already have a degree, and perhaps you have been occupied doing other things for a number of years, then we should also be very pleased indeed to receive an application from you.


GCSE Qualifications

· GCSE (or equivalent) Grade C or above in English

· GCSE (or equivalent) Grade C or above in Maths

· For Primary you will also need a GCSE (or equivalent) Grade C or above in Science

Relevant Experience

  • School Experience is no longer a statutory requirement to apply for ITT, as we are looking for the potential to train to teach. However, it can help you gain an insight in to the profession if you have had some school experience.   • We recognise that applicants may have other relevant experience which they bring to teaching and the school environment. Other relevant experience falls into broadly 3 types:
    1. Experience working with young people e.g. both paid and voluntary work
    2. Experience using subject knowledge e.g. employment in your specialist field
    3. Experience working with people e.g. managing people in the work place, voluntary work with adults

Personal Qualities

Teaching is a demanding but very satisfying career and we are interested in people who are passionate about children’s learning and opening up their minds to new possibilities. You will need to be willing to listen and respond to challenge, organised and self-motivated as although there is lots of support, you will need to be focused on the commitment involved throughout the training year. We have worked successfully with many trainees and with if the trainee has the right mind set we believe they can develop in to great teachers.
