Graduate Internships - Primary

Graduate Teaching Internships are one year programmes that provide a graduate with a paid opportunity to train and experience teaching first hand. Graduates will teach across the Primary age range (3 to 11) in a challenging but supportive and safe environment experiencing all aspects of teaching children. These internships are a powerful way of helping Graduates, who may still be uncertain over whether Teaching is the right career for them, understand what is involved in working with children and helping children learn prior to making an informed decision on whether to pursue Qualified Teacher Status or a PGCE.

The Graduate Internship programme is a broad programme and covers a variety of aspects of working with children. As a result of their experience, some of our interns have decided not to pursue teaching but pursue other careers that involve working with children, for example, child psychology, speech and language therapy, child nursing etc.

It is useful to read about how some of our recent Graduate interns are progressing. The examples below help illustrate that the programme provides a solid base from which to progress in to teaching if you are at all uncertain.

Abbie Warrie completed her Graduate Internship at Halifax Primary School in 2014-15. The year after her Internship she went on to complete her Initial Teacher Training through SCITT with one of her placements being Halifax school. She re-joined Halifax School as an NQT in 2016-17, becoming Science lead in 2017-18 and now has a place on the Senior Leadership Team at the school.

Chris Lake completed his Graduate Internship at Halifax Primary School in 2015-16. He went on to join a 2 year Teachfirst programme, employed by Halifax school, completing his NQT year in 2017-18. He is now the Deputy English leader and has been accepted on to a Teachfirst leadership programme.

The video below gives a first-hand account from people who have gone through a Graduate Internship.
